Walking out happy starts with a clear conversation. Here is how to describe what you want so the barber hears the same picture you do.
Why ‘just a trim’ goes wrong
Vague words mean different things to different barbers. ‘Short’ to you might be ‘medium’ to them. The fix is to be specific and visual.
Bring the right information
Photos
Two or three reference photos — ideally of similar hair to yours — say more than any description. Show front, side and back if you can.
Numbers for the sides
Clipper guards are numbered. “A number two on the sides, faded up” is clear. If you do not know, ask what was used last time and note it.
The top in inches or finger-widths
“Leave about two finger-widths on top” beats “not too short.”
Words that actually help
- Say what you want to keep, not just what to remove.
- Mention how you style it day to day.
- Flag any cowlicks or thin spots up front.
Speak up during the cut
It is far easier to take more off than to put it back, so check in early. A good barber welcomes it.
The real shortcut is a barber who listens and remembers. Once you find one through a solid men’s haircut in Chicago, stick with them — and if you are still looking, Artur’s Barber Shop is a good place to start.
